Genes, as you know, are made up of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that act as instructions to make protein. They contain all the necessary information to make you, run you and repair you. With the help of Genetic testing, it is possible to identify variations and mutations in the genetic code. We spoke to Chandni Luthra, the co-founder, and director of FutureMed Devices that offers Genetic test in India.
How is the test done?
Our sample collection method for all are Wellness and pharmacogenetic tests that are non-invasive. We use a Buccal swab (cheek swab). For certain tests such as oncology, newborn screening and some clinical diagnostics test where the blood sample is required. Once we receive the samples, our team of experts tests the swabs for response to a selection of key genes that are associated with specific conditions (as per the test selected).
DNA genetic test is different from an ancestral genetic test, right?
Yes. Ancestral genetic testing offers information on the genealogy of where your ancestors came from and other genealogical factors such as hair and eye colour. Genetic tests analyse the genes that carry important information related to your diet, nutritional supplementation, fitness, emotional and addictive behaviors, among others.
Who can take these tests? Is there an age limit?
Anyone can take the test, the younger the better.
Will the test results stay the same if a child grows up to be a teenager and then an adult?
The DNA of a person does not change throughout life unless subjected to extreme radiation or space travel. So, unlike blood tests, results remain the same.
What is the accuracy rate of the test result?
The test result we arrive at is mostly 99 percent accurate as we test only researched and validated markers.
How can doctors/medical practitioners as well as the person taking the test take help of these tests to diagnose and treat a person?
They can arrive upon correct and early diagnosis. These tests also help them to practice precision medicine and precise dosages in certain cases.
Can life-threatening diseases such as cancer be detected by this test?
Yes. Cancer and other life-threatening diseases such as multiple sclerosis can be detected if one undergoes the tests under our clinical diagnostics panel.
Can lifestyle disorders such as diabetes be detected in early stages or even before it has set in?
Genetic testing is a scientific method of preventive care. Preventive measures tend to be more effective when one identifies the risk with more accuracy. Cardio-metabolic diseases such as hypertension, cardiomyopathy, obesity, and type 2 diabetes can be correctly predicted. The test tells you whether you are at high risk of developing the disease so that you can alter your lifestyle to delay its onset.
Will a DNA Genetic test help someone lose weight?
Yes, it can help with weight loss, as well as muscle gain and performance enhancement by providing a genetically optimised nutrition, weight loss and fitness combo based on your unique DNA.
In what cities in India can the test be availed? Who can afford to get the tests done? What is the cost involved?
You can order the test from all over India on our website (futuremed.co.in). The costs of the tests range begins from Rs 5,760 for individual wellness and extend to Rs 40,000 for the clinical diagnostics test.
